The Book

At the Tide’s Mercy: Voices from the Marshallese Exodus is an oral history and rigorous fieldwork documentation exploring the nuclear legacy and migratory experiences of the Marshallese. Between July 2025 and March 2026, the author collected 145 valid questionnaires among indigenous communities in Majuro and the Marshallese immigrant enclaves in Seattle, carrying out in-depth interviews with nineteen respondents.

Focused on the migratory paths and firsthand memories of ten interviewees from varied age groups and backgrounds, and supported by group-level analysis derived from survey data, the book systematically examines the Marshall Islands’ present realities: economic development, medical resources, employment prospects, everyday subsistence, the allocation of compensation and welfare, persistent trauma from nuclear testing, and ongoing efforts for cultural continuity.

Through individual life journeys, this volume illuminates the collective condition of Marshallese people navigating historic trauma and modern structural pressures. Survey data and personal testimonies reinforce one another, weaving together a chronicle of forced exile for citizens of a microstate. The hardships facing the Marshallese are not an isolated case. Lingering colonial harm, accelerating climate crisis, economic dependency, population dispersion, and intergenerational cultural rupture constitute shared existential dilemmas confronting every small island nation across the Pacific.
